Marriott Grand Hotel Golf Club and Spa
The
long and glamorous history of Marriotts Grand Hotel began
in the early 1840s. A judicious gentleman named F. H. Chamberlain
noted that Point Clear peninsula on Mobile Bay was blessed with
all the elements of an ideal resort site. Cool southwest winds during
spring and summer, and tree-protected warmth in the winter. A sandy
beach. Boating and fishing. Acres of scenic, sun-blessed natural
beauty. And magnificent, panoramic views.
Convinced that others would share his love for the region, Mr.
Chamberlain bought 400 acres of prime waterfront property and began
construction of the Point Clear Hotel. Completed in 1847, this 40-room
resort rapidly became a fabled retreat for Southern aristocrats
and other members of the antebellum elite.
Marriotts Grand Hotel is a year round resort on the eastern
shore of Mobile Bay one mile west of the town of Point Clear. This
queen of antebellum Southern resorts graces the eye with moss draped
oaks on five hundred fifty beautifully landscaped acres.
Marriotts Grand Hotel offers deluxe accommodations, outstanding
cuisine prepared by the resorts experienced culinary staff
and recreational activities including two challenging golf courses,
horseback riding, tennis and watersports.
Marriotts Grand Hotel underwent a multimillion dollar renovation
in 2001 and 2002. A new swimming pool is now open and two restaurants
are being remodeled. Existing guest rooms have been completely renovated
and one hundred thirty new rooms added.
Meeting facilities are being expanded and construction is underway
on a new twenty-six thousand square foot spa facility.
Mobile, Alabama
Mobile is located in Mobile County and it is the county seat. It
lies in the southwestern corner of Alabama along Interstate Highway
10, on the banks of the Mobile River. Mobile is the only seaport
of Alabama and the city is graced by huge, moss-draped oak trees.
More than 250,000 people live in the metropolitan area that covers
128 square miles.
Founded in 1702 as Fort Louis de la Mobile, Mobile is one of the
oldest cities in the United States. Settlers moved onto the present
site in 1711 because of floods. Mobile is often called the City
of Six Flags, due to successive rule of the French, British and
Spanish. It also has flown the flags of the Republic of Alabama,
the Confederate States and the United States.
With the worlds largest forest products terminal, the Port
of Mobile ranks first nationally for wood pulp exports and second
for forest products. Airplane maintenance and repair are growing
businesses in the area.
